Gibson Guitar Corporation boasts a rich history and produces one of the most revered instruments in the music industry. Although Gibson began as a mandolin-making company, it is now more well-known for its guitars. With the endorsement of the most popular guitarist at the time – Les Paul – Gibson began producing electric guitars shortly after World War II.
Gibson was founded in 1894 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The company’s operations were run there until the mid-80s when it moved to its current home in Nashville, Tennessee. The privately held company also has a “Showcase” location on Memphis’ famous Beale Street, a production facility in Bozeman Montana, as well as several subsidiary locations including Gibson Pro Audio in California. In addition to electric and acoustic guitars, Gibson produces bass guitars, amplifiers, mandolins, banjos, violins and more. Many Gibson instruments are now collector’s items.
Gibson has expanded over its 120-year history, adding many well-known subsidiaries, such as Baldwin, Epiphone, Garrison and Wurlitzer. It now employs 1001-5000 employees throughout its locations and stores, about 500 of them working at the Nashville plant. Annual revenues are rumored to be approaching $1 billion, with an average growth rate of 20 percent over the past decade. An amazing success story, considering back in 1986, before its current leadership, the company was on the brink of closing its doors.
