The largest fashion retailer in the world, Zara began as a small clothing store in La Coruna, Spain in 1975. In accordance with the vision of Zara's founders, Amancio Ortego and Rosalia Mera, the store sold designer-lookalike clothes at affordable prices. Enjoying incredible success, Zara began expanding throughout Spain.Zara became an international operation in 1980, when it opened a store in Portugal, after which it opened stores in the U.S. in 1989 and France in 1990. During the nineties, the company continued to establish its international presence by expanding into Mexico, Japan, and throughout Europe. Today, the company operates over 2,000 stores in 88 countries, with its headquarters in Arteixo, Spain.
