Office Manager Overview
Office Managers are responsible for the oversight of a company's office. The settings may vary based on the industry that a business is involved in, but the need for an Office Supervisor is important to ensure that other personnel are able to stay on task. An Office Coordinator may be responsible for managing supplies needed for other office support positions. Additionally, a manager may evaluate the performance of support staff, manage office records and endeavor to improve departmental procedures. An Administrative Manager should have excellent leadership skills and should be able to communicate effectively. Attention to detail is a priority, and the candidate for such a position should be able to analyze information in order to make appropriate decisions for the department.
Office Manager Education Requirements
The minimum education needed for employment as an Office Manager is a high school diploma or equivalent. However, the management emphasis of such a position may be better addressed by an individual who possesses a background in administrative services or business management. Some organizations may require an associate or bachelor's degree. Specialized training may also be required. In some cases, a support worker in an office may advance without specialized training due to on-the-job experience acquired in the industry or office in question.
Office Manager Job Market
Average growth at a rate of 12 percent is expected in the administrative management field between 2012 and 2022. Competition is expected to be significant for management positions at high levels in various companies and fields, and positions at lower levels may provide the opportunity for those interested in advanced positions to gain practical experience prior to seeking higher-level opportunities. Administrative positions may develop in connection with new approaches to meeting organizational needs. For example, contracted services may require office management personnel who can address the details of those contracts and providers.
Office Manager Salary
The average hourly wage of Office Managers in 2012 was $38.98. This equated to approximately $81,080 per year. The majority of individuals employed in such positions worked at least 40 hours per week, and approximately 25 percent worked in excess of 40 hours weekly. The highest earnings for Office Managers were recorded in finance and insurance professions, and the top 10 percent of individuals in the field earned more than $143,000 in recent years.
