Administrative Receptionist Overview

Receptionists handle a variety of tasks in many different business settings. Positions may range from Medical Receptionists who greet patients and make appointments to Executive Receptionists who work for a corporate officer to complete various administrative tasks. Bilingual Receptionist positions may be important in areas with significant populations of non-English speakers. A prospective Receptionist should have outstanding communication skills as this individual is responsible for providing and recording information in-person and via telephone. Additionally, a candidate for an office position should have excellent computer skills for data entry and research that may be required. A Receptionist should be able to transition quickly between different tasks and needs to be able to handle a fast-paced work environment.

Administrative Receptionist Education Requirements

The minimum education needed for a Receptionist position is typically a high school diploma or equivalent. However, computer training may be important based on the specific requirements for a position. General keyboarding skills are important, and familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet programs may be necessary as well. On-the-job training is often provided to acquaint a newly hired worker with the specific routines and concerns in an office.

Administrative Receptionist Job Market

Statistics indicate that a growth of 14 percent is expected from 2012 to 2022 in employment opportunities for Receptionists. A significant portion of this growth is expected to be generated by the healthcare industry as increasing demands for medical services are experienced. In other industries, the growth of Receptionist opportunities may be significantly slower. This might be partly due to the increasing use of technology to manage communications and scheduling.

Administrative Receptionist Salary

In recent years, the median annual income for receptionists was $25,990 with an average hourly rate of $12.50. Receptionists employed in the healthcare field earned significantly more per hour than those working in personal care services. Dental Receptionists earned an average of $14.67 per hour during this time period. The upper 10 percent of earners in the field averaged more than $18.16 per hour. Approximately one-third of workers in this field are part-time employees.
