User Experience Specialist Overview

Also commonly called Usability Experience or UX Specialists, User Experience Specialists are tasked with designing and evaluating the way in which end users interact with various systems. The user experience is a crucial aspect of websites, applications, computer programs and many other platforms. The primary responsibility for a User Experience Specialist is to make the experience as simple and appealing as possible for end users. Typical tasks include collecting and analyzing usage data, testing various components of the user experience, understanding and assessing the expected behavior of end users and working in close concert with design teams and programmers to create attractive and highly-functional user interfaces for assorted platforms.

User Experience Specialist Education Requirements

Though some companies may only require a high school diploma, a bachelor's degree is generally required. Ideal candidates for the field often hold degrees in fields related to computer science, human-computer interaction or software ergonomics, marketing, cognitive psychology, information technology or graphic design. Practical experience in product development, design, customer service, business management or marketing is preferred. Many jobs also require functional knowledge of various programming and markup languages as well as graphic and multimedia design software.

User Experience Specialist Job Market

Recent statistics indicate that usability experience is a growing market, with related jobs projected to increase by more than 4 percent nationally. User Experience Specialist jobs are growing even more rapidly in some states, ranking among the most rapidly growing fields in the job market. A master's degree in a usability-related field is especially valuable. The strongest candidates will have at least three years of experience in a role related to design, usability or marketing. Similar occupations include User Experience Designer as well as User Interface Designer.

According to statistics, the median annual salary for a User Experience Specialist in the United States is around $81,100. The bottom 10 percent can expect to make about $20.88 per hour, while the top 10 percent take home $57.38 per hour on average.
