Aerospace Engineering Overview

Aeronautics aerospace engineers conduct basic and applied research for evaluating the adaptability of aircraft equipment and materials. These professionals design, construct, and test missiles, aircraft, and spacecraft to ensure the prototypes function according to the design. Most engineers work for corporations that engage in design and analysis, research, development and manufacturing. With more time being spent in an office environment, aeronautics aerospace engineers utilize software design tools and sophisticated computer equipment for evaluations, tests and training. Individuals who enter this field of expertise focus on propulsion and aircraft system design as well as study the aerodynamic performance of construction and aircraft materials. Aeronautical engineers work directly with the technology, practice and theory of flight. With potential employment opportunities in aerospace design engineering and aircraft service engineering, jobs in this field can vary greatly, depending on the level of formal training.

Aerospace Engineering Education Requirements

Corporations and the federal government require aeronautics aerospace engineers to earn at least a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering or a related field, which allows individuals to gain an entry-level position. Preparation coursework may cover a variety of topics such as physics, math and chemistry. Students will obtain field, laboratory and classroom studies in propulsion, structures, aerodynamics, stability and more. Cooperative programs and internships are available to help give students the practical experience they need to succeed in this industry. Aeronautical engineers do not need a license for an entry-level position, but those who wish to obtain a higher wage or career advancement should earn their Professional Engineer license. Several states require the completion of continuing education courses to retain licensure.
