Aircraft Maintenance Technician Overview

The responsibilities of an Aircraft Maintenance Technician are to perform any necessary upgrades or maintenance on a wide variety of aircrafts. This could entail examining the plane or helicopter before they can leave the manufacturing plant, diagnosing major electrical problems on the aircraft, using tools to remove any defective parts, and ensuring that commercial aircraft meet government or state regulations before flying with passengers.

Aircraft Maintenance Technician Education Requirements

In order to become an Aircraft Maintenance Technician, individuals typically need to attend an Aviation Maintenance Technician School approved by the FAA, or Federal Aviation Administration. Associate and bachelor's degrees are available in aircraft maintenance, but students can also opt to earn a 30-month certificate that includes a hands-on internship with an expert in the field. It will also be helpful to have innate skills, such as the ability to pay close attention to detail, be naturally dexterous, have confidence in troubleshooting abilities and taking creative approaches in order to find the right solution.

Between 2010 and 2020, there is predicted to be an 11-percent increase in the number of Aircraft Maintenance Technicians in the United States. This is a definite positive trend for those interested in the industry as it translates to roughly 3,650 new job openings each year throughout the country.
