Fishery Biologist Jobs

Fishery Biologist Overview

Biologists who work in fishery research conduct studies to understand how the environment and other outside forces affect fish life cycles. Some Fishery Biologists specialize population control. Marine Fishery Biologists focus on studying species that live in the ocean, and fishery limnologists study freshwater species. For example, to help regulate fishing quotas in relation to population, biologists count the number of salmon in an area, document the food supply and determine how many fish can be supported. Others working in applied research focus on fish habitat related problems, such as how urban development and industrial waste affect fish habitats. These tests help create regulations to control industrial pollution to help protect the environment. Fishery Biologists work as part of a team in identifying fishes and invertebrates. They review biological data for accuracy and objectively assess field biologist performance. Often, biologists working with teams of other professionals need to be able to explain their projects to individuals with unrelated backgrounds, since an important part of the job often includes finding and securing continual funding.

Fishery Biologist Education Requirements

Typically, a Fisheries Biologist is required to hold a bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline like biology, limnology, aquatic biology or zoology. Independent research studies are usually lead by individuals with a master's or doctoral degree in fisheries biology.
