Agriculture and Fishing Horticulture Overview


An Agriculture and Fishing Horticulturist specializes in plant and fish propagation and cultivation. They often conduct research to produce higher crop yields. Some professionals conduct field research and others raise plants and crops in controlled settings. Horticulture, as a science, is represented by several groups, distinguished on the basis of crop and plant use. Horticulturalists engage in plant and fish research to learn more about evolution, inheritance and artificial selection to produce new generations of crops with desired qualities.

Agriculture and Fishing Horticulture Education Requirements


Horticulturalists can enter the field with a bachelor's degree in biology, agricultural science or botany. Master's and doctoral degrees in horticulture are usually required to land a research job in private laboratories or government agencies. Landscape architects have stringent entry requirements. In 47 states, they are required to pass a licensing exam and to have at least a bachelor's degree.

Agriculture and Fishing Horticulture Job Market


There are several career opportunities in the horticulture industry. Entrepreneurial and professional opportunities exist in the nursery crop production industry, wholesale and retail sales and in the installation and maintenance of outdoor and indoor landscapes. Individuals who take grass management courses are likely candidates to manage golf courses, athletic or recreational fields.

Horticulturists work in many industries including private research laboratories, greenhouses, universities, agriculture businesses and government agencies. Employment of agricultural and food scientists is expected to grow about 9 percent from 2012 to 2022.

Other occupations related to horticulture that you may want to consider include Horticulture Supervisor, Horticulture Sales, or Horticulturist.

Salary Expectations in Horticulture


According to recent statistics, the median annual salary for landscape architects was $64,180 as of May 2014. The median annual salary for agriculture and food scientists was $58,610.
