Logging Equipment Operator Jobs

Logging Equipment Operator Overview

Without Logging Equipment Operators, creating lumber and logs for commercial use would be a time-consuming process, which would drive up the price of wood. These operators control heavy machinery that hold, transport and deliver logs to different job sites. Operators must gauge each load to balance and hold it safely during transport. They may even clear logged areas of leftover brush or branches. This position requires a lot of hours in the field and solid concentration to keep everyone safe. Inspection of the equipment itself is necessary throughout the day for productivity and safety.

Logging Equipment Operator Education Requirements

Most logging workers on the ground only have a high school diploma or GED certificate, but equipment operators must be certified to run their particular machine. Trade school experience with a certificate, license or degree is required of operators, depending on the area. Heavy machines pose significant threats to the driver and nearby workers. Once workers are certified, they typically have on-the-job training to familiarize themselves with machines on the job site. From rolling hills to flat terrain, operators need to feel comfortable operating the machine on the job site before lifting logs.

Logging Equipment Operator Job Market

According to predictions, there is only a 1 percent growth in jobs for logging equipment operators between 2012 and 2022. Changes in employment will probably be caused by retiring operators and replacements filling their positions. Other employment changes may be for similar jobs, such as forest conservation workers or forestry technicians. Because many parts of the world are recycling and repurposing old wood, logging jobs are relatively few. If workers are already employed, they tend to stay there for the long run. General logging workers are seeing a decline in job growth by 9 percent between 2012 and 2022.

Logging Equipment Operator Salary

Operator salaries range between $21,000 and $47,000 each year. The median remains at about $34,000 a year. Salaries vary based on experience and education. Skilled Logging Equipment Operators are highly coveted by logging companies to keep each job site productive.
