Parts Manager Overview


A Parts Manager is also referred to as an inventory control or purchasing manager. These managers are in charge of receiving, shipping and internal movement of parts, such as automotive or electronics parts. Each industry needs a strategy and hierarchy to move parts without losing profit. Some items can be as small as nuts or bolts. Parts managers create control parameters, enforce them and reconcile inventory counts at the end of each quarter. They also research vendors and parts supplies to lower overhead and increase profits. Managers must be able to work well with others as they set critical rules across the department.

Parts Manager Education Requirements


For almost any management position, a bachelor's degree is the minimum education requirement. Parts Managers must be able to quantify inventory numbers and costs, along with analyzing the information for better efficiency. Potential candidates can major in business or even computers. To work in a highly competitive parts management position, such as in a large corporation, candidates can look into master's degrees. Specific degrees for parts or inventory management are typically supply chain or operations courses. Although there is on-the-job training for any industry, most Parts Managers have the basic skills ready for the first day.

Parts Manager Job Market


The Parts Manager job market has slow potential growth of about 3 to 7 percent between 2012 and 2022. The competitive market has prompted many people to return to school and possibly earn a graduate degree. However, companies still value work experience in parts control positions, along with a bachelor's degree. Staying competitive through experience and schooling is the best way to secure that lucrative position, even as an Automotive Wholesale Parts Manager or in Automotive Service Management.

Parts Managers' salary range is extremely wide because of the many differences in the industry. Pay scale ranges between $57,000 and $158,000 each year. This range is based on the parts type, industry and company size.
