Biomedical Engineering Technician Jobs

Biomedical Engineering Technician Overview

The overall objective of a biomedical engineering technician is to use their background in engineering and biology to create better medical care for patients. They achieve this goal by designing new types of diagnostic equipment, repairing existing equipment and testing equipment for safety. Some biomedical engineering technicians may also lead courses for hospital or clinic staff so that everyone knows how to use important, life-saving pieces of machinery on patients in any situation. Daily tasks may range from troubleshooting an X-ray machine to brainstorming with peers about a new type of material for an even more effective hip replacement.

Biomedical Engineering Technician Educational Requirements

Typically, the minimum level of education required in order to work as a biomedical engineering technician is a bachelor's degree in the subject of biomedical engineering. Many of the most successful biomedical engineering technicians in the field have also earned a master's degree in a niche area of engineering. Students who want to enjoy careers in medicine or engineering may also want to pursue accreditation with ABET, or the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Biomedical Engineering Technician Job Market

Biomedical engineering is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States. Statistics forecast an impressive 27 percent growth in job demand for biomedical engineering technicians between 2012 and 2022, which translates to the creation of an additional 5,000 new jobs in a single decade. Much of this growth can be attributed to the growth of the medical industry as a whole as well as to the rapid technology advances of machinery used in diagnostic and patient care. Similarly growing positions within the biotech industry include bio-analytical scientists and biomedical engineering technicians.

Biomedical Engineering Technician Salary

In 2012, the median salary for a biomedical engineering technician in the United States was $86,960. However, there are several factors that can influence an individual's salary in the field. Those working in scientific research and development, for example, tend to earn higher salaries than those working for surgical hospitals or state-run colleges and universities.
