Biomedical Equipment Technician Jobs
Biomedical Equipment Technician Overview
Biomedical equipment technicians are responsible for keeping medical devices up and running. They assemble medical machines and test them to make sure that they are running properly. They perform routine maintenance on the machines and make repairs as needed. They fill out and maintain documentation on the various machines and the repairs they have done. Biomedical equipment technicians also teach the staff how to use the equipment properly and how to perform small fixes to the machines.
Biomedical equipment technicians work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes and other medical facilities. They generally work under supervision though some are self-employed. While technicians may work alone while making repairs, they must also cooperate and collaborate with their supervisors and with the staff who will be using the equipment.
Biomedical Equipment Technician Education
Biomedical equipment technicians generally need an associate degree in a field such as biomedical equipment technology, engineering or electronics. Technicians who work with complicated machinery or who have additional job responsibilities may be required to obtain a bachelor's degree. It is possible for people to find biomedical equipment technician jobs that only require on-the-job training, however. Technicians may continue to advance their education or receive additional on-the-job training to keep up with the latest advances in medical technology.

There are over 38,000 biomedical equipment technicians employed. However, the need for qualified biomedical equipment technicians is growing quickly, making this one of the fastest growing occupations that requires an associate degree.
