Biomedical Technician Jobs

Biomedical Technician Overview

Biomedical technicians, sometimes also called biomedical equipment specialists, are responsible for maintaining and repairing medical equipment. Biomedical technicians can work in hospitals or private practices or for medical manufacturing companies or even the military, and they are an integral part of any medical facility. Typical duties for a biomedical technician can range from repairing an X-ray machine to adjusting the settings of cardiac diagnostics machinery in order to help pick up heart problems faster.

Biomedical Technician Educational Requirements

Generally, biomedical technicians are expected to hold a bachelor's degree. However, there is some flexibility in what kind of degree is needed. Those who want to primarily do hands-on physical repair for medical machinery may choose a biomedical engineering degree while others might opt to major in biomedical sciences. For some careers in the field, an associate degree in biomedical equipment technology can be sufficient although that does not allow for much upward mobility within the industry.

Biomedical Technician Job Market

In the United States as a whole, it is forecast that the demand for biomedical technicians will increase by as much as 27 percent between 2012 and 2022. This incredible growth can be attributed to the rising population, the increased need for medical care and the advances in medical technology that create more machines for use in doctors’ offices, clinics and hospitals. This rise in demand for trained biomedical technicians is positive news for anyone interested in pursuing this career, for it translates into more job openings and less competition during the hiring process as a whole. Similarly thriving career opportunities for those in the field might include biotech analyst, biomedical equipment technician or bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing specialist.

Biomedical Technician Salaries

There are a number of factors that can influence the salary of a biomedical technician, and these can include geographic location, years of experience, work ethic and place of employment. However, the average salary for a biomedical technician in the United States is $44,570. Some of the highest salaries in the field go to those working for large hospitals, and the lower end tends to be for those employed in medical machinery stores.
