Cell Biologist Jobs

Cell Biologist Job Overview

Cell biologists study the structure and activities of cells from bacteria, plants, animals, and parasites. They may design and conduct research projects, supervise research technicians, identify and classify organisms, prepare technical reports, present research findings, and keep up with current knowledge in the field by reading professional journals and attending conferences. Most cell biologists work in research and development. They rely heavily upon computers for genetic and statistical analysis of research findings. They may work with a team of related scientists such as microbiologists, neurologists, virologists, and physiologists.

Cell Biologist Education Requirements

The typical level of education for entry into a job as a cell biologist is a bachelor's degree. In order to conduct independent research or to perform higher level experiments and analysis, a master's degree or doctoral degree is preferred. Cell biologists may receive supplemental on-the-job training, especially in the use of technology and computers used in this line of work. As pursuits such as cell culture and genetic analysis are increasingly computerized and mechanized, cell biologists who are familiar with computer programming and information technology may retain an advantage in their field of expertise.

Cell Biologist Job Market

The job outlook for cell biologists is 7 percent growth from 2012 through 2022, which is slower than average for all occupations. Cell biologists who have a solid understanding of other disciplines such as biochemistry and genetics may find improved prospects for employment. Pharmaceutical, research, and development industries hold the most promise for job opportunities. The job market in government will be dependent upon funding and budgetary issues.

Cell Biologist Salary

According to statistics, the median annual pay for cell biologists was $66,260 in 2012. Cell biologists working for the federal government earned the highest annual salaries while those employed by colleges and universities earned the lowest annual salaries.
