Banking Jobs

Banking Job Overview

Working in the banking industry can be a great way to earn an income for a family and move up in a career. There are several different banking jobs that require different degrees and levels of experience. One option is becoming an investment banker, which involves working long hours but can be very profitable. Investment bankers typically work at big banks in larger metropolitan areas, such as New York City, San Francisco, Tokyo and London. Some of the duties of an investment banker include watching the market to determine the best time to invest money and turn high profits. It's a demanding job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

Another option is to become a bank teller, which involves working at a bank and interacting with customers each day. Some of the daily tasks might include depositing money, cashing checks and taking payments on loans.

Banking Job Education Requirements

The educational requirements for banking jobs depend on the actual job in question. Investment bankers, accountants, business banking officers and banking senior client managers typically have at least a bachelor's degree, usually a master's degree in finance and/or business. Bank tellers usually have high school diplomas, and will receive about a month of training on the job. It's a great job for students who attend night school, since the hours are fixed and won't require staying late or overtime.

Banking Job Market

There are many entry-level banking jobs available around the country, since it is usually a position that has a high rate of turnover. The data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the number of jobs isn't projected to grow dramatically over the next 10 years, but there will continue to be open positions. Investment banking and accounting is a more competitive market that may require additional experience and knowledge in order to get ahead and advance.

Banking Job Salary Information

The salaries for banking jobs vary drastically, depending on how much experience and education a candidate has in the field. Investment bankers and chief financial officers can make well over six figures, while accountants around the U.S. earn a median salary of $63,550. Bank tellers earn an average salary of $24,940. There is room for growth and advancement in the banking world for those who are willing to continue their education and learn more about business practices, operations, management, and finance.
