Management Consultant Job Overview
The tasks and requirements for a Management Consultant position vary depending on the contract and industry. For example, a certified project manager or an individual with an MBA can manage projects for information technology companies, construction companies, manufacturers, healthcare facilities and other industries.
Management Consultants usually occupy project-based and temporary positions. They can expect to travel to meet with clients or oversee a project in other regions or countries. They may perform a wide variety of daily tasks including project scheduling, project coordination, documentation, contract negotiation, interfacing with clients and stakeholders, and determining future directions for projects and organizations. Management Consultants are hired by organizations to improve business processes, mitigate business risks, assist with vetting staff and minimize waste. These consultants may work with one or many departments, and they communicate with all levels of the business.
Management Consultant Educational Requirements
A four-year degree from an accredited college or university is generally required for a Management Consultant position; however, a master's degree is sometimes preferred. Professional certifications, such as the Project Management Professional certification, demonstrate to employers that the candidate is well-versed in standardized management practices and has demonstrated management abilities. Past experience as a business analyst, requirements analyst, project coordinator, assistant manager or team leader help to prepare the candidate and provide the skills necessary to successfully perform the tasks required for the position of Management Consultant.
