Retail Job Overview

Retails jobs are almost as plentiful as hospitality jobs, making them a common starting job. Businesses need retail associates, managers and other office personnel. Retail associates are responsible for assisting customers, processing customer payments, keeping showrooms organized and any other specific tasks assigned by the store manager. They are needed in stores that sell merchandise ranging from clothing and furniture to auto parts and custom goods.

Retail Job Tasks include:
  • Organizing merchandise on showroom floor
  • Counting inventory on shelves and back storage room
  • Changing price labels for ever-changing sales
  • Stocking shelves, hanging clothes or arranging merchandise
  • Maintaining showroom floor for cleanliness
  • Taking payments at the cash register
  • Helping customers find products
  • Marketing/advertising
  • Finance

Retail Job Education Requirements

No special education or training is required to work in an entry-level retail position, but a high school diploma or GED is preferable for all retail associates. More education also gives people seeking retail jobs more room to grow and advance into management or hold more specialized retail jobs, such as a retail loss analyst. However, attention to detail, math skills and physical stamina are required. Retail associates spend most of their time on their feet, often the entire shift.

Retail jobs are commonly held by high school and college students as a first job, but anyone can apply for a retail job if they have customer service skills. Retail jobs are predominantly part-time positions, but full time positions are definitely available.

Retail Job Market

Job growth in the retail market is average with an increase of approximately 10 percent per year. However, the market fluctuates throughout the year with its peak hiring time from October to December because of the influx of sales due to the holiday season. Retail jobs are some of the easiest to attain because higher education isn't typically required, and there is always an abundance of openings because the turnover rate for retail associates is high.

Retail Job Salary Information

Retail associates can expect to make between $8 and $11 per hour, which is $18,000 per year on average. More experienced retail associates can make more money. There is also a big variance in pay rates from one industry to another. In general, high-end stores pay retail associates more money than common department stores. Some retail associates are also paid on a commission basis. Retail assistant manager jobs pay significantly better than retail associate jobs. Retail managers can make $40,000 per year or more. Of course, there are plenty of business retail jobs even higher up that pay more.
