Construction Employment Information
Construction Job OverviewConstruction workers play a vital role in the economic growth of an area. They perform physical labor to build, repair, and maintain residential and commercial buildings throughout the world. There are general construction workers who typically perform jobs such as demolition, digging trenches or ditches and loading or unloading equipment at a job site.
As construction workers take on more work, they can start to specialize in certain areas of construction, such as painting, plumbing, sheet metal installation, electrical work, carpentry, cement masonry and more. These jobs have heavy physical requirements, so workers must be in good health and free from medical conditions that limit their abilities.
Daily tasks might include:
- Using machinery and tools to dig and level the ground
- Installing building components, including drywall, sheet metal, concrete, etc.
- Repairing, installing, or replacing pipes
- Installing or repairing roofing
- Demolition of buildings
Construction Job Education Requirements
Most general construction jobs don't require formal education, as the Construction Managers understand the value of training while on the job. If seeking a more specialized area of construction work, training and an apprenticeship under a licensed and qualified Contractor or Electrician may be necessary in order to learn how to perform these aspects of the work. Those who work with hazardous materials, such as asbestos, lead, and mold, will also need additional training and education in how to protect themselves and others from the dangerous chemicals and effects.
Construction Job Market
Even during slower economic times, construction jobs are often available throughout the country. Construction is always necessary, whether it involves tearing down and replacing a building or starting new construction in an undeveloped area. In a study performed by the Bureau of Labor, more than 800,000 construction workers performed some type of work on a project in 2012. In the next decade, statistics show that construction jobs will continue to grow by 21%, with more than 1 million workers needed to meet the demand.
