Customer Service Representative Job Overview

Customer service representatives help customers to have the best possible experience in dealing with a company. While they are best known as the people who listen to customer complaints, they have many other job responsibilities as well.
Customer service representatives answer questions customers have about the company or its products or services. They process orders, calculate charges, process bills and payments and make adjustments to customer accounts. Additionally, they answer phones, help customers find items and sometimes use cash registers to ring up purchases. Customer service representatives take action to handle customer concerns and complaints either by remedying the situation themselves or by referring customers to management as needed.

Customer Service Representative Education

Customer service representatives generally only need a high school diploma or a GED in order to find customer service representative jobs they are qualified for. Many of the skills that customer service representatives need are either innate, or they can be learned on the job. Much of the knowledge that customer service representatives require is company-specific, so an advanced education is not typically required.

The expected growth rate for customer service representative jobs is 13 percent, which is about average. With many companies in need of customer service representatives, applicants should be able to find a job fairly easily. Applicants with excellent customer service and computer skills have the best chance of being hired.

This wage will vary based on their years of experience, both within the company and in total, as well as the particular company they work for.
