Service Representative Overview


Customer service representatives respond to a customer’s questions and complaints while providing essential information about the company, products, sales, order processing and services. They may perform this duty in person, by phone, email or through Internet chat. The service representative’s duties may vary by industry, but many businesses, from manufacturing to food service, require some form of customer contact and service in order to thrive. Service representatives are needed in a wide range of industries and may be given a variety of titles such as Energy Customer Service Representative or Insurance Customer Service Representative.

Service Representative Education Requirements


Customer service representative positions generally require only a high school diploma. A minor amount of on-the-job training is typically provided by the hiring company. The training provided usually lasts for about two weeks. Customer service positions in the industry of finance or insurance may require licensing and/or certifications. This is because this industry’s customer service personnel must be consistently up to date on continually changing regulations that affect the business. The types of licensing and certifications required will vary by state and in some cases may involve the need for additional training and testing.

Service Representative Job Market


Statistics show that jobs for service representatives are expected to increase by 12.6 percent between now and 2022. This means that approximately 298,700 new jobs will be opening in this field. Those aiming for customer service positions in the insurance and finance industry should expect to meet greater competition for these jobs, which also pay better.

Service Representative Salary


The median salary ranges between $12.71 and $16.44 per hour with the lowest 10 percent of all salaries for this field being below $9.38 and the highest 10 percent receiving $24.00 hourly. Service representative salaries vary depending upon experience as well as industry. The highest salaries found for this career are in the finance and insurance industry. Mid-level salaries are found in the technical and credit intermediation industries, and the lowest salaries are found in the administrative and support services. Salaries for customer service positions in the finance and insurance industries range from $31,000 to $56,000 per annum with the mean being $38,000 yearly.
