Desktop Publisher Jobs
Desktop Publisher Overview
Desktop publishers are responsible for creating layouts for magazines, brochures, newspapers and books, and preparing them to be published in print or online. They are generally expected to research fonts, prints, graphics and other page elements in order to bring them together in a way that meets an employer's or client's expectations. Desktop publishers require above average computer skills, including the ability to operate and utilize desktop publishing and graphic software programs to complete jobs. An eye for detail, organizational skills and artistic ability are all skills that desktop publishers utilize on a daily basis. Publishers are expected to follow through to the end of each project, including proofing, correcting errors and finalizing documents for publication. The skills necessary for desktop publishing may also qualify a publisher for a job in graphic design or as a web designer.
Desktop Publisher Education Requirements
Generally, desktop publishers must have at least an associate’s degree to qualify for open positions though some employers may accept talented individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent. Ideal desktop publishing candidates hold a bachelor’s degree in a computer science or graphic design specialty with coursework in subjects like color theory, graphic art, design software and desktop publishing.
Desktop Publisher Job Market
From 2012 to 2022, the outlook for desktop publisher jobs is expected to decline approximately 5 percent. Employment opportunities continue to decline as companies rely more heavily on other publishing professionals, such as graphic designers, copy editors and web designers, to perform many of the functions that desktop publishers do. For the best opportunities, a desktop publisher should branch out into other design and computer science skills to stay on top of trends within the publishing field.
