Aviation Job OverviewThere are many different jobs available in the world of aviation. From aerospace propulsion engineers to air traffic controllers, there are career opportunities for a range of skill sets. The aviation industry consists of pilots, flight attendants, ticket agents and airport administrators along with scientists, engineers, lawyers and mathematicians.
Aviation Job Education RequirementsThe minimum requirement for most aviation jobs is a high school diploma, GED certificate or the equivalent. Some jobs in aviation, particularly in the military, require a college degree, several years of study in math and science or several years of technical training. Those interested in getting a career in aviation through the U.S. military attend a specialized training program.
Those interested in obtaining employment as a pilot must prepare for this career as early in life as possible so as to have the best opportunity for success. After completing high school, the prospective pilot should obtain a college education. While a college degree is not a requirement for becoming a pilot, organizations and businesses that employ pilots prefer that candidates have a degree. Those interested in becoming pilots should look for a college that provides a pilot certification as well as a bachelor's or associate's degree in aeronautics or aviation science. Coursework requirements typically include physics, English, mathematics and aeronautical engineering. It is important that the future pilot chooses an aviation or aeronautics program that has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. Although FAA-approved courses are typically more expensive than others, they provide certification that the future pilot has received the best possible training.
Aviation Job MarketAlthough the aviation job market dipped during 2011 and 2012, it is currently back on the rise. The number of available positions in the aviation job market is projected to increase by 200 percent between 2011 and 2031. Two jobs related to the aviation engineering field are Aerospace Engineering and Aircraft Engineering.
Aviation Job Salary InformationThe salary of individuals employed in the field of aviation varies considerably. Customer-training agents typically make $36,000 per year. Aerospace technicians typically make $126,000 per year.
