Electrical Engineering Job Overview

Electrical engineers design, create, test and oversee electrical control systems according to certain specification like sustainability, safety, quality, and reliability. Electrical engineers often participate in the manufacturing of equipment like power generators, electric motors, communication devices and navigation systems. Electrical and electronics engineers work mostly in manufacturing, government, engineering firms and research and development. Their work is primarily indoors, although they may conduct site visits to identify a problem or assess a piece of equipment.

Electrical Engineering Job Education Requirements

As with other similar careers, such as mechanical engineering and chemical engineering, electrical engineers usually need a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering or electrical engineering technology. Most institutions allow electrical engineering students to specialize in fields like electronic circuit design, microelectronics, microwaves or semiconductor devices.

For electrical engineers who want to advance into management or enter academia, some engineering programs offer a five-year degree that culminates in a bachelor's and master's degree. Pursuing a terminal degree, such as a Ph.D., in electrical engineering is also a possibility for those who wish to teach at the college level or go into research and development.

Electrical Engineering Job Market

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the electrical engineering field currently has 306,100 positions and will add 12,600 more in the next decade. The field will enjoy job growth in coming years, as emerging technologies depend heavily on engineers' knowledge and skills to develop and apply them. However, a growth of just 4 percent is predicted for the discipline in the next 10 years, which is slower than the national occupational average. This slower-than-average rate is largely due to minimal growth or decline in many sectors of manufacturing.

Electrical Engineering Job Salary Information

In 2013, the median annual salary for electrical engineers was $93,380, or $44.89 per hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Electrical engineers who were in the top 10 percent of earners made $139,400, and those in the bottom 10 percent made $57,330.

Electrical engineers in the software publishing industry has the highest salaries, making an average of $119,330, and those who work in the oil and gas extraction industry has the second-highest average salaries, making $118,680 annually. Those who work in the electrical equipment manufacturing industry make the least, with an average of $82,430, while those in the electric power industry have the second-lowest salary of $87,900.
