Engineer Jobs

Engineer Job Overview

Engineering contains many different job categories and employment opportunities. The main engineering fields include civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, computer programming, environmental and biomedical. Civil engineers work on buildings, reservoirs, bridges, roads and all other industrial, commercial and residential structures.

Mechanical engineers design, improve and test mechanical devices, such as vehicles, engines, tools and other machinery. Electrical engineers work on electrical equipment, including design of wiring in all types of buildings, as well as the electrical systems in airplanes and vehicles. Chemical engineers work with individual molecules and atoms to improve nanotechnology and energy storage. Computer engineers design and improve computer systems, including software and hardware. In environmental engineering, employees work to protect the environment and make sure that resources are used properly. Biomedical engineers use medicine, engineering and biology in their field as they create and design solutions to improve patient care in the medical field.

Engineer Job Education Requirements

Working as an engineer in any of the main categories will require a bachelor's degree at minimum. Some jobs require master's degrees, although that is more prevalent in the education and research side of engineering. The educational program for any engineer will include many upper-level math and science classes. Once an engineering student chooses an area of focus, he or she will have to take additional courses that correspond. For example, a student of civil engineering will take surveying courses that provide training and knowledge about road placement and design, while biomedical engineering students will take more courses in biology and medicine.

There may be some lower positions available to those without a bachelor's degree, but it will be nearly impossible to advance in an engineering career without any formal education. Engineering students can often gain experience in the workforce by working in internships at firms.

Engineer Job Market

Engineering is a difficult subject, so the industry is always looking for experienced and educated professionals. Each engineering specialty has its own set of statistics, but positions within each category are projected to grow over the next ten years.

Engineer Job Salary Information

Engineering salaries depend on the education level and experience. The starting median salary for an engineer with a bachelor's degree is $65,620, but chemical, biomedical, and mechanical engineers tend to earn the highest starting salaries. Engineers who have experience and have passed a national exam can become partners with engineering firms, and these positions have higher pay.
