Environmental Ecologist Overview

Environmental Ecologists spend most of their days surveying ecosystems to determine the diversity, number and behavior of plants and animals in an area of land. This job typically takes place out into the field in order to conduct research, classify animals and plants and detail the information found. Lab work can also play a large role in the life of an Environmental Ecologist. They will need to present their findings in a clear and concise manner either in person or a written format. They might also be responsible for creating a program to educate the surrounding community on ecology and environmental matters.

Environmental Ecologist Education Requirements

An individual must have a deep love of science to pursue a career as an Environmental Ecologist. Those looking to find a job in environmental ecology should plan to get a specialized science degree. For a low-level job without much room to grow a bachelor?s degree will suffice. However, to succeed as an Environmental Ecologist, a person would need a least a graduate degree, but preferably a doctorate degree to move up in their field. On their path to achieving a doctorate degree, they will spend much time in the field learning their specialty. Other environmental jobs with similar education requirements include Environmental Planner and Environmental Conservationist.

Environmental Ecologist Job Market

In recent studies, there has been an increase in concern for climate change and the need for environmental jobs that help preserve ecosystems as man expands his land usage. Someone with a little experience and a solid educational background can secure a position as an Environmental Ecologist in either the private or public sector. Jobs will be found with federal, state and local government agencies as well as consulting firms and nonprofit organizations. There is the possibility of securing a job teaching environmental ecology to others.

Environmental Ecologist Salary

The average annual salary of an Environmental Ecologist is $63,570 or $30.56 per hour. Of course, this salary can fluctuate based on the employer. Other factors include the region of the country and level of education.
