Environmental Education Jobs Overview


Environmental educators are responsible for determining data collection methods; collecting samples from the field; analyzing samples; developing plans for mitigating environmental hazards; educating other scientists, professionals, businesses, government officials and the public about the environment; and preparing reports about their findings. These educators may also testify in court or serve on an expert panel for the development of regulations and laws that relate to the environment. They work in a mixed environment that includes some time traveling, some field work and some time spent in offices or giving presentations. Much of their work is done with the aid of computers.

Environmental Education Jobs Education Requirements


The required educational level for becoming an environmental educator is a doctorate degree. At this level of education, environmental educators can teach at the university level, work in academia, consult or work as part of a governmental or industrial research team. Minimal on-the-job training may be provided for using computer programming software.

Environmental Education Job Market


According to statistics, the job market for Environmental Education Jobs is expected to grow by 15 percent between 2012 and 2022. This pace is faster than the national average for all occupations. Increased public interest and awareness of environmental problems as well as the growing burden of humans on the environment are adding to the opportunities in this field. Most of the job growth will be in governmental positions, nationally funded research centers and at publicly funded universities. Similar jobs that are growing include environmental consulting and environmental research jobs.

Environmental Education Jobs Salary


The mean annual salary for environmental educators is $45,470. The lowest 10 percent of earners held annual salaries of less than $26,600 while the highest 10 percent of earners made more than $76,650 annually. Those working in the waste treatment and disposal industry and in local government tend to command the highest salary while those working in hospitals and state government earned the lowest average salaries.
