Billing Clerk Overview

Billing clerk jobs are found in every industry and in companies of all sizes as billing clerks help maintain a smooth and accurate flow of revenue. Important duties for company operation fulfilled by the billing clerk include invoicing customers and vendors, keeping billing records organized and reviewing all records for possible errors. Billing clerks might be requested by department heads to prepare appropriate financial reports, and they may even be tasked with implementing new billing policies to improve cash flow.

Billing Clerk Education

A college degree is not usually required to obtain a billing clerk position, but most companies request a basic background in accounting, bookkeeping or finance. Billing practices vary by industry, so on-the-job training is common to ensure that a billing clerk processes invoices according to company-preferred methods.

All employers will require that their billing clerk have a basic knowledge of computers and basic data processing programs, and training and certification may be provided for specific software used by the company. Specialized billing clerks, such as those in the medical field, may be required to undergo formal training and certification to understand how to process insurance paperwork correctly.

Billing Clerk Job Market

In 2012, the Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that there were more than 1.4 million billing clerk jobs in the United States. The number of billing clerk positions available is expected to grow by approximately 11 percent by 2022, which is considered a stable amount of growth in comparison with other fields.

Specialized billing clerks in the medical and insurance industries are expected to see a surge of growth since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act as it is likely that more medical and insurance-related transactions will take place.
