Public Policy employees are typically responsible for creating and managing policies that allow a company to reach its financial and ideological goals. Typically, their chief responsibility is to maintain or enhance a company or client’s public image. This sometimes means coordinating campaigns to bring in donations or revenue.
Public policy analysts often work for the government and are responsible for preparing statements and identifying alternative solutions to matters of public policy. Tasks may include writing press releases for the media, identifying audiences and determining the best way to reach them, and developing their client’s image and identity. After years of experience, public policy analysts can become senior public policy analysts. In addition to a pay raise, they can also receive the responsibility of mentoring young policy analysts. They may also wish to specialize by working in either a policy research or planning policy jobs
Public Policy Job Education Requirements
Ordinarily, a bachelor’s degree in political science, public relations, or communications is required. Some employers do prefer a master’s degree in public relations, journalism, or nonprofit management. Prospective public policy employees should expect to take courses in advertising, public affairs, and creative and technical writing. Years of experience are often required, and employees are expected to have excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Employment in public policy is expected to grow about 13 percent by 2022. Online social media is increasing the need for qualified public policy employees, as organizations, companies, and clients need to be able to respond to the rapid rate at which news travels around the internet. Public policy employees must be prepared to coordinate response strategies that are tailored to social media platforms. Although competition for these jobs is considered very tough, prospective employees can often gain an edge if they have a master’s degree in philanthropic studies or experience in the industry. About one quarter of public policy employees are employed by civic or religious organizations. Other industries that employ public policy workers include the health care industry, educational organizations, and advertising and public relations firms.
Public Policy Job Salary Information
The median pay for public policy employees was about $95,000 in 2012, according to the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest 10 percent earned about $51,000 annually, and the top 10 percent made about $180,000 annually. Those in public policy that worked for public relations firms typically made the most money. Those in civic organizations had wages that met the industry’s average, and public policy workers in the health care field made less than the average.
