Pastry chef Overview


A pastry chef’s duties vary based on the size of the company he or she is employed in, but can typically be summed up rather easily. A pastry chef is in charge of producing baked goods like pastries, breads, desserts, and other sweets. Typically employed in hotels and restaurants, pastry chefs have the potential to make quite a large amount of money in the right location.

Pastry Chef Education Requirements


While pastry chefs technically only require a high school diploma or GED, training in the culinary arts is important. To rise higher in the ranks or to become the head pastry chef, upwards of five years’ experience is needed. In addition, the ability to remain cool under pressure and balance tasks to quickly produce a large amount of baked goods simultaneously.

Pastry Chef Job Market


Job outlooks for pastry chefs are expected to grow by 5 percent by 2022, a below average amount compared to other careers. However, there are a projected 2,470 project annual job openings. Pastry chefs often find employment working for restaurants, hotels, universities, hospitals, and sometimes even on cruise ships. Those looking to become pastry chefs should begin training as soon as possible, as chefs with previous experience and a wide repertoire of recipes are in high demand among employers.

Pastry Chef Salary


Pastry chefs make a salary ranging from $12 per hour when starting out to as high as $30 an hour in some locations. The monthly wage of chefs employed on cruise ships can be around $2,000, while those employed in higher positions, such as head pastry chef, can reach as high as $78,000 per year. The salary varies based on location, experience, and the employing company.
