Overview


Restaurant managers are responsible for ensuring that the daily operations of a restaurant run smoothly. They handle complaints from workers, schedule employees, order food for the restaurant and handle other major and minor tasks. Restaurant managers are also responsible for ensuring the happiness of customers and making sure that customers are satisfied with their experiences at the restaurant. Managers also advertise for new positions, interview workers interested in those jobs and hire new employees. The hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing industries, and restaurant managers can work in other hospitality fields, including as resort managers, restaurant deputy managers and bar managers.

Restaurant Manager Education Requirements


Many restaurant managers possess a high school degree and gain experience on the job. Employees can work their way through the ranks, starting as a waiter, waitress, chef or hostess before gaining more experience. Some advanced positions require a two or four-degree from an accredited college or university, and others gain experience through vocational training. Positions relating to a restaurant manager include training positions and assistant manager positions. Trainers prepare new employees and teach them the skills they need on the job, while assistant managers handle many of the same tasks as full restaurant managers.

Restaurant Manager Job Market


Statistics show that the job outlook for restaurant manager positions will remain the same in the coming years. Experts believe that the number of available restaurant manager positions will increase by 2 percent from 2012 to 2022, which represents little to no change overall. Approximately 5,000 positions will become available during that time period, which includes managers leaving for other hospitality industries and those opening their own restaurants. Chefs and owners need workers trained in employee management, daily operations and other skills relating to restaurant management.

Restaurant Manager Salary


Restaurant managers make a median annual salary of $42,000, but workers in the industry report starting out with a salary as low as $35,000 or making as much as $55,000 a year.
