Driver's License Examiner Overview

A driver's license examiner is responsible for evaluating a driver to determine if they are able to safely use a motor vehicle and follow the associated laws and regulations.
The driver's license examiner administers vision, written and road tests. They also must determine if the tester’s mental and physical abilities comply with federal regulations. If the tester passes all qualifications, the examiner is responsible for recording the necessary information, photographing the tester, collecting payment and issuing the completed license. Examiners also renew licenses and issue identifications cards and learner’s permits, and some may issue passports or passport information.
Examiners work with the public and must be patient and objective under all circumstances. The job requires working with technical tools such as bar-code scanners, facial recognition systems, fingerprint-capture devices, computers, software programs, driving-simulation software, scanners and imaging software.

Driver’s License Examiner Requirements

This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Occasionally, additional education and training may be required. Depending on the location, examiners are hired from within the department, from the civilian world, or from the ranks of their highway patrol officers. Some departments also have a minimum age requirement of 21. A prospective examiner must pass a physical exam, have a current driver's license in good standing and pass a background check. Some departments require their examiners to pass a civil service exam.
