Federal Jobs

Federal Job Overview

Federal jobs encompass a wide range of potential careers. One may serve as an elected official or as a judge for a higher level court system. However, even being employed at the post office entails working in a federal capacity. Any occupation that serves the federal government in some form or another is a federal job, and this includes accountants, computer technicians, or other employees who fulfill any variety of roles in a federal building.

Federal Education Requirements

A federal job will usually require a bachelor’s degree at minimum. Anyone serving in a federal legal capacity will require a law degree, and most federal-based firms require college educations for their employees. However, someone serving in a custodial position may be able to find work with only a high school diploma. In addition to education, background checks are performed on all federal employees. Many federal companies also require employees to sign nondisclosure agreements due to the kind of work performed.

Federal Job Market

It’s tough to pinpoint the job market for federal work simply because the number of them is so wide. Take lawyers, for example: There is expected to be 10 percent growth by 2022, resulting in around 19,000 new jobs opening each year. Then again, not all lawyers work in a federal capacity, so how much of this growth is due to the federal job market growing is unclear. To provide another example, the market for loan officers is expected to grow by 8 percent by 2022. Not all of this is federal growth, either – loan officers work for commercial and civilian companies as well. Overall, the market points to an upward trend in growth, but specific numbers depend largely on the field.

Federal Salary

Wages for federal workers vary. Most federal workers receive full benefits packages on top of their wages, which makes federal employment worthwhile for most. However, an economist for the federal reserve makes an average annual wage of $140,000 while a technical analyst for a federal loan company might make an average annual wage of $98,000. A lawyer working for the federal government can make between $124,000 and $150,000 per year. Total income varies based on the specific federal job someone has.
