Government Contracts Specialist Job Overview

The job of a government contracts specialist is to read, review, negotiate and make decisions about any contracts that the government branch they work with are considering entering into. It is the contract specialist's job to understand all contracts and to ensure that they comply with the best interests and the policies of their institution. If there are parts of the contract that the contracts specialist is concerned about, they work with the company to amend the contract to meet the interests of both parties, but particularly the institution she works for.
A Government contract specialists also writes contracts for their own institution, and they are consulted when there is a breach of contract. They may write new contracts using existing contracts as a template, or they may write them from scratch. If ever there is a problem, the contract specialist reviews the contracts and seeks ways to resolve the problem.

Government Contracts Specialist Education Requirements

Government contracts specialists are generally required to have a bachelor's degree in a field such as accounting, contract law or contract negotiations though it may be possible for some to find government contracts specialist jobs with several years of work experience in a related field. Candidates seeking government contracts specialist jobs should ideally have three to five years of work experience in related fields, which they can gain by being a legal assistant or paralegal.
