Postal Service Mail Carrier Jobs

Postal Service Mail Carrier Overview

Postal service mail carriers are responsible for delivering mail to residential and commercial addresses. Carriers are assigned established routes, covering their area by foot, vehicle or a mixture of both, depending on how far apart the mailboxes are. Carriers also provide change of address forms to members of their routes, as well as sell products like stamps in more rural areas away from post offices. The skills necessary for mail carrier positions may also qualify candidates for positions as mail service equipment operators or a mail services supervisor.

Postal Service Mail Carrier Education Requirements

Generally, no special degrees are necessary to qualify for mail carrier jobs. However, a high school diploma or GED is generally required. Applicants must be 18 years of age, a United States citizen, and must have a firm understanding of the English language, both speaking and reading. While no specific degree is required, applicants must pass a mail carrier test that examines both speed and accuracy when working with names and numbers. The test also covers mail distribution procedures. Once the written exam is passed, potential mail carriers must pass background checks, drug testing and a driving test for carriers who will be using postal service vehicles.

Postal Service Mail Carrier Job Market

The job outlook for postal service mail carrier jobs is expected to decline approximately 27 percent from 2012 to 2022, in comparison to the average for all occupations. Employment opportunities are projected to drop due to a mixture of budget deficits in the postal system, and the introduction of automated delivery point sequencing systems. These systems remove the need for mail carriers to sort their deliveries, allowing fewer carriers to deliver more mail to larger routes. Retiring mail carriers will open some positions, but more applicants are expected than available positions.

Postal Service Mail Carrier Salary

The median annual salary for postal service mail carrier jobs is $56,490 per year. Salary levels vary based on factors like years of experience and the location of each mail delivery route.
