Public Policy Analyst Jobs

Public Policy Analyst Overview

A public policy analyst is one part of a larger system that ensures new policies are fair for everyone involved. Public policy analysts frequently find themselves employed by nonprofit organizations, various media outlets, and most often in government agencies. A college education is necessary, but the field pays well and is very rewarding, allowing someone to help better society in often under-appreciated ways.

Public Policy Analyst Education Requirements

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences, social sciences, or a related field is required to become a public policy analyst. In addition, it is imperative an analyst be able to think critically about various situations and be able to deduce the most favorable outcome. Skill with computers is beneficial, and strong social skills are a requirement. Often analysts will find themselves speaking with people on a hypothetical basis, determining whether a specific policy is worth implementing or not.

Public Policy Analyst Job Market

The job market for public policy analysts is expected to grow by 2 percent by 2022, resulting in 640 job openings annually. While the growth is slow, it is steady; the government and various nonprofit groups are constantly in need of skilled policy analysts to ensure new, more beneficial policies make it through the planning stages.

Public Policy Analyst Salary

Public Policy Analysts make between $50,000 to $183,000 per year. The reason for this disparity is the amount of funding many places have; for instance, a small research institute or nonprofit might not be able to pay as high a wage as a large corporation could. Average annual salary tends to be around the $50,000 dollar range for most companies, but a policy analyst with years of experience will likely make more than one who is just starting out.
