Certified Nursing Assistant Job Overview
Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) provide basic care in hospitals, nursing homes, residential care facilities and private homes. A certified nursing assistant job entails helping patients with bathing and other activities of daily living; repositioning and transporting patients; and communicating with patients, nurses and visitors.
Certified nursing assistant jobs often require the ability to lift and move patients.
In some states, nursing assistants can dispense medication, though additional certification may be required to do so.
Certified Nursing Assistant Education
To land CNA work, you must meet state training requirements, which include both classroom and clinical education. A certificate is awarded to students who complete this training and pass an exam.
CNA job training is offered by community colleges, vocational and technical schools, hospitals and nursing homes.
Certified Nursing Assistant Job Market
More than 1.5 million people held jobs as nursing aides, orderlies or attendants in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Their ranks are projected to increase 20 percent by 2020, faster than the average occupation.
Certified Nursing Assistant Salaries
Nursing aides, orderlies and attendants earned median pay of $24,190 in 2011, the BLS says. The top 10 percent earned $35,170.
