Counselor Job Overview
Counselors work in a variety of settings to offer emotional support. A counselor may provide support in rehabilitation for someone who is recovering from drug or alcohol abuse, or they may offer counseling for a child, family, or couple who is in need of emotional support for a variety of issues.
Not all counseling, however, deals with emotional concerns. There is also the educational sector for counseling as well. Counselor Job Education Requirements
Almost all counseling positions requires at least a bachelor’s degree while many others require a post-graduate degree as well. Many people who work in a counseling field obtain their degree in counseling, psychology, or education. The level of degree required is dependent on the type of counseling a person pursues.
Almost all school counseling positions requires a master’s degree while other counseling positions, such as rehabilitation counseling may only need a bachelor’s. There are also other routes to get into counseling. Some people start out as a teacher and later decide to become a counselor. In a different sector, sometimes people with experience in social work transition to counseling.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics estimates almost a 12 percent increase in jobs, which would equate to over 31,000 jobs for school counselors. Currently, there is a demand for school counselors especially at the collegiate level.

The average salary for a school counselor in the United States is over $53,000 per year. The people who make the most money in counseling generally work for the federal government or for schools and live in metropolitan areas. The top salary for a counselor is just under $70,000 while the average low is just over $41,000 annually. For a rehabilitation counselor, the mean annual wage is $37,660 according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
