Medical Transcription Jobs

Medical Transcription Job Overview

Medical Transcriptionists are responsible for listening to live or recorded dictations from doctors or medical professionals and transcribing them into digital correspondence and reports that go into the patient's record or into medical journals. They also review and edit medical reports, usually for an additional fee. Candidates must possess strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, grammar, and have knowledge of word processors and other computer programs. A particular perk of the job for most is the ability to work from home rather than from an office.

Daily tasks for Medical Transcription Jobs include:

  • Listening to audio and dictating the information
  • Deciding what information should be included
  • Produce medical reports, correspondence, administrative material, and statistics
  • Perform data entry
  • Identify mistakes in reports and edit them accordingly

Those wishing to pursue a similar job should also consider a position in Medical Billing and Coding, as the entry requirements are similar.

Medical Transcription Job Education Requirements

A majority of medical transcription jobs require some form of postsecondary training. Many vocational schools, online schools and community colleges offer training in the field. To advance, many medical transcriptionists obtain at least an associate's degree, and some even a bachelor's degree, although it is not required for entry-level positions. Employers also offer on-the-job training for office-based employees.

Certifications are the most important aspect of obtaining a job as a medical transcriptionist. The first certification a candidate should receive is presented by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity called the Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist or RHDS. After a minimum of two years on the job, a transcriptionist can then obtain a Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist or CHDS certificate. Transcriptionists can also get a certification from the American Association of Medical Transcription. A similar job that would not require as much education for an entry-level position would include a Medical Secretary.

Medical Transcription Job Market

Due to the advancements in voice recognition technology, the expected job growth for the field is only 8 percent over the next ten years. However, the date for the job becoming obsolete is currently unknown, leaving the field lucrative for the foreseeable future.

Medical Transcription Job Salary Information

Entry-level positions tend to earn an average of $14.40 an hour, or an annual salary of about $25,000 a year. Those with at least 5 years of experience had a median wage of $34,000, while medical transcriptionist supervisors made a median salary of $54,998.
