Medical Transcription Job OverviewA medical transcriptionist converts voice recordings made by doctors and other healthcare providers into written reports. They also might review and edit reports generated from speech-recognition technology. Transcriptionists interpret abbreviations and other medical terms to create patient medical histories, test results, discharge summaries, referral letters and other medical documents. Competent medical transcriptionists must have a solid command of grammar, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, word-processing software and medications. Similar careers include court reporters, medical records clerk and medical assistants.
Medical Transcription Job Education RequirementsMost medical transcription jobs require postsecondary training. Community colleges, vocational training schools and online programs typically offer training in this field. Candidates might pursue an associate's degree in the discipline, which requires four semesters of study, or a certificate, which requires two to three semesters. These programs typically include coursework in medical terminology, punctuation and grammar, risk management and the legal aspects of medical documentation. Supervised on-the-job experience is common in these programs.
With regard to certifications, the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity's Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist (RHDS) certification is the entry-level credential. With two years of work experience in a multi-specialty or acute care setting, transcriptionists can apply to become a Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist (CHDS).

While the burgeoning healthcare sector will increase demand for transcriptionists, the growth is eased by technological advances in transcription software. Wages in this field increased by 3.6 percent from 2012 to 2013. The highest-earning 10 percent of medical transcriptionists make $47,960 annually, or $23.06 per hour. The lowest-earning 10 percent make $22,750 annually, or $10.94 per hour.
Medical transcriptionists who work for insurance carriers have the highest average annual salary, making $44,640, while those who work for in the business support services industry have the lowest average salaries, making $32,140. Florida and Pennsylvania have the largest number of medical transcription jobs, while Washington, D.C. and Massachusetts have the highest average medical transcriptionist salaries.
