Nursing Home Administrator Job Overview

Nursing home administrators work hard to serve the needs of patients and their families, and they juggle many responsibilities. The most common job duties of a nursing home administrator may include:

Nursing Home Administrator Job Education Requirements

Most employers require that nursing home administrators have at least a bachelor’s degree in health administration. Sometimes one can start work as a nursing home administrator with a bachelor’s degree in another field as long as they have healthcare administration experience. It’s more common to find nursing home administrators with master’s degree in public health, health services, public administration, or other related field. Graduate programs will also enable candidates to have supervised on-the-job training, which is very valuable when starting entry level positions.

Candidates are encourages to get at least a master’s degree in order to compete for the most desirable positions. Those who are interested in similar positions that vary in their educational requirements may also consider medical front desk office administrator jobs and healthcare management jobs.

Between 2012 and 2022, there is an estimated job growth of 23 percent in medical and health services manager jobs, which includes nursing home administrator positions. That’s significantly greater than the job growth that’s predicated for most other professions and occupations. As baby-boomers age and more people have access to health care when they need it, there will likely be an increasing demand for nursing home administrators.

The average annual salary for nursing home administrators was approximately $85,000 in 2012. The highest 10 percent of earners in this position make over $150,000 per year, while the lowest earning nursing home administrators make under $54,000 per year. Those who have a higher education and more experience usually command the highest salaries.
