Nursing Job Overview

Nursing jobs can encompass a variety of different tasks in many areas and specialties of medicine. The four areas of work for a nurse offering care are:
  • A specific part of the body (such as a nurse in general surgery)
  • A specific health condition (such as a nurse working with patients who have cancer or diabetes)
  • A specific environment (such as an emergency room registered nurse)
  • A group of people (such as a nurse working in a senior clinic)
If a nurse works in a hospital setting, he or she may work in all four of these categories within the same week, or he or she may specialize in one area and only work there. However, it's also possible to be a non-hospital nurse.

Nursing Job Education Requirements

At minimum, nursing requires an associate's degree, but most nursing jobs require a bachelor's degree. In some cases, an employer will hire a registered nurse who has an associate's degree, then pay for their continued education to earn a bachelor's degree. However, some jobs won't hire any nurses who do not have a bachelor's degree. Obtaining a registered nurse license involves taking an exam that is specific to the state in which the nurse lives. Some jobs will pay for renewal and upkeep of this license.

Nursing Job Market

There are currently about 2.6 million nurses working in the United States, with the potential for growth in the next 10 years and beyond. Due to the growing demands for healthcare based on population growth and aging, as well as the increase in insured individuals as a result of the Affordable Care Act, the need for nurses will continue to rise. However, these jobs are often very competitive, and, in some areas, they are more difficult to get.

Certain states have a higher ratio of unemployed nurses to open positions, so consider that when obtaining education. There are certainly jobs available, but they may not always be in your desired geographic region.

Nursing Job Salary Information

According to data from 2012, the median salary was $65,470. Typically nurses working in hospitals, home health care and government healthcare clinics earn the highest wages (home health care nurses are in high demand due to the aging population). Those who work in emergency rooms or hospitals outside of traditional working hours can also earn a higher hourly wage, resulting in more income. There is more flexibility in working hours for nurses, since many healthcare facilities offer care 24 hours a day.
