Nursing Job Overview

Nursing jobs are the backbone of the healthcare labor force. Nurses provide bedside care; observe and record vital signs and other health metrics; aid in care planning; and communicate with other clinicians, patients and families.

Nursing careers include certified nursing assistant (CNA), licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), nursing supervisor, nurse manager, director of nursing and chief nursing officer.

Nursing Education

Educational requirements for careers in nursing vary widely. Nursing assistants may earn a certificate in a year or less; nursing-school faculty positions can require a PhD, entailing eight or more years of study. Training for almost all nursing job opportunities includes a mix of clinical and classroom experience.

Additional training is often required for nurses who choose clinical specialties like pediatrics, diabetes, oncology or critical care.

Nursing Job Market

RNs held 2.7 million jobs in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). There were 1.5 million people in CNA and related occupations and 750,000 LPNs. All of these jobs in nursing are projected to grow faster than the average occupation by 2020.

Nursing Salaries
