Pharmacy Technician Job Overview
Working under the supervision of a pharmacist, pharmacy technicians fill prescriptions in a hospital or other healthcare setting, or in a retail pharmacy. Pharmacy technician jobs also involve customer service tasks, such as taking payments, answering phones and processing insurance claims. In healthcare settings, pharmacy technician work may include giving patients medications.
Pharmacy Technician Education and Certification
Most pharmacy technician jobs require a high school diploma and in some cases, completion of a one-year certification program from a community college or vocational school. In some states, you need to be certified before you can work as a pharm tech.
Getting certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the National Healthcareer Association will improve your chances of landing pharmacy technician employment.
Pharmacy Technician Job Market
The number of pharmacy technician job opportunities will increase 32 percent from 2010 to 2020, which is much faster than most jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports. That growth will be fueled by increased demand for prescription drugs coming from aging Baby Boomers and an increase in the number of prescription drugs available to consumers.
Pharmacy Technician Salaries
The median pharmacy technician salary in 2011 was $28,940, the BLS reports. The top 10 percent earned a median of $41,880.
