Radiologic Technologist Jobs

Radiologic Technologist Job Overview

Radiologic technologists work in doctor’s offices, medical centers, and hospitals around the world. They perform diagnostic imaging exams on patients including x-rays and CT scans. Among the duties they perform each day are typically the following:

  • Operate imaging equipment
  • Work with doctors and follow their lead on which body areas to image
  • Talk to patients about the procedure and address any questions or concerns
  • Shield the areas of patients’ bodies that do not need to be examined
  • Instruct the patient on where to sit or how to adjust themselves for the test
  • Adjust the equipment to get the best image
  • Take the image with the equipment
  • Help doctors evaluate the images
  • Assess the quality of images
  • Make a detailed patient record for each exam

Candidates who enjoy working with people and can work under pressure will thrive in this position. Radiologic technologists need to be able to handle a large amount of responsibility and be very capable of handling expensive equipment with care. Other healthcare professionals who work with diagnostic equipment include those who work in hospital nuclear medicine technologist jobs and diagnostic medical sonographer jobs.

Radiologic Technologist Job Education Requirements

Most radiologic technologist positions require that candidates have at least an associate’s degree. Additionally, they must have licenses or certifications in many states. In order to be able to compete for the most desirable positions even at an entry level, candidates should pursue as high an education as possible. Many bachelor’s degree programs are available in radiography. The education programs will probably provide a balance of academic learning and hands-on clinical training.

Radiologic Technologist Job Market

Between 2012 and 2022, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates an approximate growth of 21 percent in radiologic technologist jobs, which means that there will be around 41,500 new jobs created. This estimated job growth is relatively large, and that’s partly because there will be an increased need for healthcare workers of all kinds because of an impending increase in the aging population as well as changes to the availability of health insurance. Hospitals will remain the primary employer of radiologic technologists.
