Employee Relations Manager Position Overview

An Employee Relations Manager, also known as a Labor Relations Specialist or a Human Resource Specialist, plays a major role in the hiring process of organizations. Employee Relations Managers may be responsible for interviewing candidates, screening potential employees and placing workers within the organization. The Human Resources department may also be delegated to handle additional tasks such as training and payroll. Employee Relations Specialists administer worker contracts, interface with temporary staffing agencies and permanent placement agencies, and work with employees at all levels of the corporate structure. Human Resource Specialists may also be involved in employee training and career development. A Labor Relations specialist may be appointed as the company representative to various union representatives.

Employee Relations Manager Educational Requirements

Most companies require a bachelor's degree in business, human resources or a related field to qualify for a position as an Employee Relations Manager. However, industry-specific skills and specialized experience may be required. For example, if the company is a union shop, the Employee Relations Specialist would likely be required to have a working knowledge of union contracts and benefits.

Employee Relations Manager Career Outlook

Overall, the rate of growth for Labor Relations Specialists or Employee Relations Managers is slower than the average of other professions. Many companies will continue to hire Human Resource Managers to handle hiring, benefits management and logistical employee management tasks. Employee Relations Managers generally report to the Director of Human Resources within the organization. Someone with more experience may be interested in an Employee Relations management position.

The entry-level salary for Employee Relations Managers is approximately $50,000, with salaries ranging from the lower $40,000s to more than $100,000 per year. As with most positions, salaries for Human Resource Specialists and similar jobs are based on industry, work experience, skills and education.
