HR Job Overview

Workers and managers in the human resources field help plan and coordinate the administrative goings-on in a company or organization. Human resources managers are responsible for attracting candidates for job positions that will best serve the company’s image and goals. They also perform interviews and make hiring decisions for the company. The daily responsibilities of a human resources worker can include:

  • Administering employee services
  • Coordinating the details for job wanted ads
  • Interviewing potential workers
  • Making follow-up calls to interviewed candidates
  • Advising managers on company policies
  • Planning the company’s workforce
  • Facilitating communication between employees and managers
  • Supervising the work of support staff
  • Mediating disputes among staff members

These are just a few of the tasks that those in the human resources field may be asked to perform. As the link between the management of a company and its employees, human resources managers often deal with high demands on both sides.

HR Job Education Requirements

Candidates who hope to acquire a position as a human resources manager need to attain a bachelor’s degree in human resources or a similar path such as business administration. Alternatively, if they already have a bachelor’s degree in another field, they may simply take additional courses in the human resources field. Those who want to advance to higher-level jobs will need to complete a Master of Business Administration degree or a master’s degree in human resources or a similar field.

HR Job Market

There are currently over 102,000 Americans employed as human resources managers. That number is expected to grow to over 116,000 in 2022. That 13 percent job growth means that jobs for human resources managers are increasing at a higher rate than the average for other occupations. However, competition for the better jobs in the field tends to be very strong. Those who have a master’s degree have a competitive edge and tend to secure the best jobs. In order to move up in this field and acquire the positions with the greatest security and benefits, it’s best to pursue the highest education possible, which can be the difference between being a generalist and a human resources manager.

HR Job Salary Information

Human resources managers earned a median annual wage of $99,720 in 2012. The top employees took home salaries of more than $173,140, while salaries for some human resources managers were lower than $60,000 per year. Those who work for leading companies earned well over $100,000, while those who worked in health care and social assistance often earn significantly less.
