Human Resource Management Overview


Human resources managers are responsible for planning, directing and coordinating all of the administrative functions of a company. Their primary focus is to oversee the hiring of new staff from the recruiting process through placement. They are also the main point of contact for members of the executive management team and provide a conduit for communication between management teams and employees. Human resources managers work during normal business hours.

Human Resources Management Education Requirements


In order to obtain a job as a human resources manager, an applicant will need to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college in either human resources or business. In some cases where competition for these jobs is greater, a master's degree will be required. Successful candidates will also have several years of experience as a human resources generalist. They will need a high level of computer competency as most tracking functions are carried out on different computer software applications. Having good listening skills and an aptitude for organization will also be extremely useful for an HR manager as they pursue a career in this discipline. Having a command of the English language, both written and verbal, is essential in order to be able to effectively communicate with all levels of people from new-hire candidates to executive-level management team members.

Human Resources Management Job Market


The outlook for new human resources management positions is positive with a 13-percent growth expected over the next 10 years. According to statistics, there are approximately 102,700 people employed as human resources managers nationwide, and opportunities exist across all 50 states. However, greater opportunities exist where there are higher concentrations of people employed by large corporations. Similar positions include Human Resource Director Talent Management and Human Resource Employee Labor Relation Manager jobs.

The median salary for human resources management jobs in the United States is $99,720 annually. Employees working for large companies where they are required to supervise more people can expect to be on the high end of the pay scale.
