Legal Support Overview


As the name implies, a legal support professional will provide assistance and support to attorneys and other legal professionals in either a law firm or business environment. Legal support professionals include legal assistants, paralegals, court reporters, title examiners, abstractors and title searchers. The duties of a legal support professional can vary significantly depending on the type of support an employer requires. A paralegal or legal assistant will be responsible for regulatory filings, drafting of simple legal documentation, and maintaining client records. Court reporters will be responsible for recording court and legal proceedings. Title insurance clerks, including abstractors, researchers and examiners, will research publicly recorded legal documents pertaining to real estate. Legal support professionals can find employment working for attorneys, government agencies and mortgage or title insurance companies.

Legal Support Education Requirements


The education requirements for a legal support professional will vary depending on the specific type of legal support position. As a general rule, paralegals and legal assistants will need an associate degree or a paralegal certificate. A court reporter will need a high school diploma and licensing or certification by a professional organization. A title clerk will need a high school diploma.

Legal Support Job Market


Overall, the job market for legal support professionals is promising, with industry experts predicting average to above-average growth over the next decade. The job market for paralegals and legal assistants is very strong, and it is anticipated that this profession will experience faster than average growth of 17 percent over the next five to 10 years. The job market for court reporters is expected to experience average growth of approximately 10 percent over the next five to 10 years. Similarly, the job outlook for title insurance professionals is expected to experience 11 percent growth over the next five to 10 years.

The median annual salary for legal assistants and paralegals is approximately $47,000. The median annual salary for a court reporter is approximately $48,000. The median annual salary for a title insurance clerk is approximately $35,000.
