Litigation Associate Jobs
Litigation Associate Overview
Litigation associates are associate level attorneys who prepare and present legal arguments before a judge. They are expected to have above average research, communication and interrogation skills in order to successfully represent their client's case in court. Sample job tasks include communicating with clients and opposing counsel, taking part in the discovery process, collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and writing and preparing motions. Litigation associates must be able to work as part of a legal team, following direction from senior partners as well as delegating aspects of their cases to other associates, paralegals or legal assistants within a firm. While litigation associates spend much of their time in the courtroom, they also work in settlement meetings in order to prevent a legal issue from going through the time and expense of a trial. A litigation associate may work in criminal litigation or civil litigation, such as with business associate attorney positions.
Litigation Associate Education Requirements
Litigation associates go through the same education process as other attorney specialties. Candidates are expected to graduate from an American Bar Association approved law degree program, resulting in a Juris Doctor (J.D.). In order to get into law school, they must complete an undergraduate program and take the Law School Admission Test, or LSAT. After completing law school, candidates must pass the necessary state requirements to enter the bar. These requirements vary by state, but typically includes passing a state bar exam.
Litigation Associate Job Market
The job outlook for litigation associate jobs and other attorney positions is expected to rise approximately 10 percent from 2012 to 2022, which is about as fast as the average for all occupations. Employment opportunities are projected to be competitive for entry level associate attorney positions as typically more graduates finish law school than there are new open positions.
Litigation Associate Salary
The median annual salary for litigation associate jobs and other attorney positions is $113,530 a year. Salary varies based on the location, type and size of employer.
