Newspaper Delivery Overview
There's more to Newspaper Delivery jobs than pedaling your bike through the neighborhood while hurling newspapers at front doors. While that is one version of the job, there is another type of Newspaper Delivery position that requires more than owning a bike with a basket. Newspaper Delivery on this level entails driving large quantities of papers to businesses and retailers in a designated sales area, loading and unloading bundled stacks of papers and sometimes stocking the papers at the retailers' facilities. The hours can be flexible, although publishers of daily papers require that you deliver their publication in the early morning hours.
Newspaper Delivery Education Requirements
A high school diploma is the minimum requirement for Newspaper Delivery jobs. You need basic reading and math skills gained in high school to record sales and fill out invoices, as well as calculate amounts due and make change. Because you'll need to deliver newspapers to a large geographic area, a valid driver's license is also a necessity. Although it typically isn't required that you have previous experience, having people skills and a working knowledge of dealing with customers is extremely useful for Newspaper Delivery persons because you'll be your employers representative to the clients on your route.
Newspaper Delivery Job Market
It's difficult to pinpoint how open the job market is for Newspaper Delivery positions because the Bureau of Labor Statistics lumps those jobs in with all delivery and driver/sales workers. Looking at this extended job field, the BLS estimates that nation-wide there are approximately 394,110 positions, with opportunities in all 50 states.
Newspaper Delivery Salaries
You may not make your fortune with Newspaper Delivery jobs, but you should be able to find one that pays above minimum wage. In 2014 PayScale.com reported that the median salary for Newspaper Delivery drivers was $17,094, which works out to about $8.22 per hour for a 40 hour work-week.
